Transportation Infrastructure
Transportation issues in Charlotte are complex challenges that require a multi-faceted approach to solve. While the recent sales tax referendum has passed, it is only one part of the solution, and additional strategies are necessary to advance long-term improvements. I recognize the concerns about the impact of the regressive sales tax on lower-income residents. To address this, I would like to explore a tiered fee structure for transit services to minimize the negative effects of the increase and make sure everyone can access the benefits of these improvements. We have to explore a variety of funding mechanisms, including (among many other options) Tax Increment Financing (TIFs) and public-private partnerships, while continuing to advocate at the state level for the funds Charlotte rightfully deserves.
My goal is to implement these projects efficiently, effectively, and with full transparency. This includes continuing to build out micro-transit options that serve as a reliable and accessible complement to our current bus system. I am committed to expanding these services across Mecklenburg County so that every community can benefit from improved transportation infrastructure.
I am also committed to minimizing displacement. By incentivizing mixed-income housing options along future light rail corridors, we can create opportunities for residents of all income levels to remain in their neighborhoods. Additionally, reworking the bus system to integrate both light rail and micro-transit routes will maximize the efficiency and reach of all public transportation services. By focusing on collaboration and inclusive planning, we can create a sustainable transportation system that works for all Charlotte residents, now and in the future.
